Nordic Network for Ambitious Nature Municipalities and Biosphere Reserves

Local Actions for the new global framework for Biodiversity

A development project supported by the Nature Program of the Nordic Council of Ministers

Nature is under pressure all over the world. The loss of biodiversity affects ecosystems, the climate, local communities, and economies. International biodiversity goals set an ambitious course for reversing this trend by 2030 and 2050. This course will only become a reality when it is translated into concrete local decisions and actions.

It is at a municipal level that nature is restored. It is here citizen involvement translates into active co-ownership. This is where citizen science and collaboration with researchers strengthen the knowledge base. This is where nature-based solutions are integrated into planning, climate adaptation, and urban development. This is where biodiversity becomes an integral part of municipal governance and prioritization. And, not least, this is where biodiversity efforts create value for citizens.

The Nordic Network for Ambitious Nature Municipalities was established to bring together municipalities that wish to be involved in defining and developing this approach.

Who Is Behind the Initiative

The initiative builds on the Nordic collaboration Man and the Biosphere – Local Actions for Biodiversity, which has for several years worked with local implementation of biodiversity goals in Nordic UNESCO Biosphere Reserves.

With support from the Nature Programme under the Nordic Council of Ministers, the effort is now expanded into a municipal network where municipalities play a central role as drivers and examples.

The work is led by the Møn UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in Vordingborg Municipality, Denmark, in close collaboration with Nordic UNESCO Biosphere Reserves and with IUCN as international partner.
